Instructions Following Root Canal Treatment

  • It is not unusual to experience post-operative discomfort after receiving endodontic treatment, and you may have been given a prescription for this. If you do not receive a prescription, over-the-counter medications should suffice. For those who are not allergic to anti-inflammatory medications, we recommend taking two Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) with one extra strength Tylenol every four to six hours. Take these medications consistently, so they can be at their most effective. This can also help ensure that your pain relief will not wear off between doses. Discontinue taking these medications when there is no longer any discomfort.
  • Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to help prevent and control infection. It is important you take the entire prescription of antibiotics as prescribed or infection could recur.
  • After your root canal treatment is completed, you MUST return to your general dentist to have the tooth permanently restored. The temporary filling placed by your endodontist will need to be replaced with a permanent restoration.
  • Keep physical activities to a minimum immediately following surgery. Avoid strenuous activity for 2-3 days.
